Why You Should Attend

This conference will focus on neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), rare and poorly understood disorders of the central nervous system that primarily affect the optic nerves and the spinal cord. The exact cause of NMO/NMOSD is unknown and NMO/NMOSD is often misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis. Optic neuritis causes eye pain or impaired/loss of vision in one or both eyes. Transverse myelitis symptoms include neck or back pain, weakness in arms or legs, numbness, painful muscle spasms, loss of sensation, and bladder or bowel dysfunction. NMO/NMOSD can also affect brainstem structures leading to intractable vomiting and hiccups. Children may develop seizures or experience confusion. Led by expert faculty, you will learn about this challenging disorder and the importance of a careful diagnosis and early intervention using the latest medical approaches. A unique feature of this program is a concurrent patient education program conducted in collaboration with The Guthy-Jackson Charitable Foundation.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed to meet the educational needs of internal medicine physicians, neurologists, ophthalmologists, rheumatologists, neurosurgeons, pediatricians/pediatric neurologists and interested allied healthcare professionals.

NMO patients, caregivers, family and friends are invited to join us for this event at no cost.  Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with clinicians, researchers as well as each other.
