ONE/MILLION
Raising money for NMOSD awareness in loving memory of Laura Davidheiser.
Through the ONE/MILLION Foundation it is my goal to raise $2,075.69 before the end of October to help spread awareness of NMOSD and fund research. Why such a specific number? Well, last year I created a similar campaign to raise awareness for NMOSD and I was able to raise $7,924.31 by competing in several Ironman triathlons with the goal to qualify for the World Championships. But I think we can do better! I would love to raise $10,000 in total, in memory of my mom, Laura, and all the other families who are currently battling NMOSD. I’m proud to say on Saturday, October 26th I will be competing in the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona on the big island of Hawaii.
This year my message remains the same: We can do hard things and accomplish seemingly impossible feats with the right support system and the right mindset. I created the ONE/MILLION foundation a few months before my mom passed away from NMOSD in 2011. Back then we didn’t know much about the disorder, and it felt like an impossible battle. Over the past 13 years there has been a tremendous amount of growth in understanding, diagnosing, and even treating NMOSD. Currently, there are 3 FDA-approved treatments that didn’t exist in 2011. Through research we now have a much better understanding of the disorder which has given patients and their families critical resources and most importantly, hope. We are making a difference.
ONE/MILLION is a symbol of hope that encourages you to embrace being the one person out of million. Don’t be afraid to be different, dream big and take on impossible goals. In 2011 NMOSD was said to only affect one out of a million people. I thought that was fitting because in my eyes my mom was already one in a million. She is no longer with us but her legacy lives on. She is my “why”. When times get tough, I think about her and the NMOSD community. On October 26th I will be racing with the NMOSD community in the forefront of my thoughts as I endure a long day of swimming, biking, and running in the extreme elements on the big island of Hawaii.
Please consider contributing to my cause. No matter how big or small every bit helps.
Thanks,
Greg
