How important is it to participate in a clinical trial?

Fred Lublin, MD – Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai:

Participation in a clinical trial is a critical element in bringing out new drugs and new therapies for any given disease. And the research community owes an enormous debt of gratitude to the people who participate in clinical trials. These are done with rigorous criteria and under very controlled conditions. So if you’re thinking about participating in a clinical trial, you should speak to your physician about what the goal of the study is, what therapies are involved, what the expected outcome will be, what are the safety concerns of the trial, and what’s going to happen after the trial is completed. This is a very important aspect in our progress in bringing new molecules to market.
