Is there a relationship between vaccinations and NMO?

Published on April 2, 2010

Benjamin Greenberg, MD – UT Southwestern:

We commonly get asked whether or not there’s a link between vaccinations and neuromyelitis optica. In the past several years, there’s been a furor over the relationship between vaccines and various autoimmune disorders or even autism. However, the literature does not support any link between vaccines and neuromyelitis optica. We commonly counsel our patients that it’s perfectly safe to get vaccinated unless they have specific contraindications. And we try to reassure our families that it is safe to get these vaccines and that they and their loved ones will not be at increased risk for NMO.
